Photo-reportage Project

Picture
The photo-reportage project was born in spring 2012, with the initiative “Diary from Jenin”.

The main idea was to describe with pictures and articles the reality of Jenin (a city located in the North of Cisjordan) and the voluntary activities set there. Particularly, the focus of interest was on the local Palestinian associations.

Why Jenin? Situated at a few chilometers of distance from the Israeli border, this city has been haevily struck by the Defensive Shield Operation conducted by the Israel Defense Forces in 2002; it hosts the most populated refugee camp of West Bank.

The reportage is available here.

Once back home, we started an awareness raising activity in Italy, in order to report and enrich the experiences we had in the Occupied Territories. Therefore, the training course “Youths and Palestine: new tools for cultural cooperation” has been realized, followed by the photography exhibition named “Palestine: cooperation beyond the limit”.

The project had a sequel in September 2013. This time, though, we decided to enlarge our field of action. From Jenin to Jerusalem, from Ramallah to Bethlehem, from Abu Dis to Jericho, our researches had the most diverse frame and the most vary subjects. Together with the geographical coordinates, also the number of topics have been improved. Being inspired by the characters met day by day, we tried to describe the palestinian society precisely as it introduced herself in front of us, spontanously and genuinely, leaving apart any kind of plan or scheme, both material and intellectual. The most important thing to us was -and still is- to give voice to those who experience personally the  historical, political and social events in Palestine, being sure of the value embedded in the unfiltered expression of the palestinian society itself.

We are firmly conscious of the need to provide, on the one hand, an high level information service, that is as deepened as possible; on the other hand, a useful product for a constructive cooperation for the human reality we are addressing.

The result has been a series of interviews and articles, representing just the beginning of our report of the palestinian society and the life in the Occupied Territories. A story that MAIA intends to keep on telling.

Meanwhile, aming at broadcasting the materials collected so far, we decided to organize a play. Our goal was to spread more effectively those results, using the most complete artstic language: the plasticity of theatre, given by the combination of words, music, sounds, gestures and images, appeared us as the most suitable tool for transmitting our message. At the same time, it allowed us to put the microphone directly in the hands of the characters of our stories, providing them with an odience otherwise unreachable.
